ftz_a.gif (635 bytes) tax-free business environment, cost savings and convenience are important benfits offered to companies using the South Bend Foreign Trade Zone #125.   Businesses may delay or reduce their duty payments in the FTZ, and avoid time consuming customs entry procedures.
For U.S. Customs purposes, goods held in the South Bend FTZ are regarded as not yet having entered the country.  Companies may bring imported merchandise or components into South Bend's FTZ facilities with no tariff payments assessed.  Goods may then be warehoused; repackaged; assembled; processed; exhibited; manipulated in some fashion.   Only when the goods move out of the Zone for consumption is duty payment required.   Handling of goods while in the Zone may reduce tariffs; re-exported goods avoid U.S. customs duty altogether.

The Advantages

Imports are landed then quickly moved into the Foreign Trade Zone without full customs processing.

U.S. duty, applicable internal revenue taxes, quota restrictions, and bonding, do not apply to goods held in the Foreign Trade Zone.

Cash Flow improves because duty is paid only when the product leaves the Zone.  Store merchandise in the Zone until the goods are sold.  Duty is owed only when the goods are removed from the Zone.

Assembly, processing, and manufacturing, may occur in the Zone at cost savings.  Many other activities are also permissible.

Processed or manipulated goods may qualify for lower duty freight charges.

Imported goods qualify for the "Made in the USA" label if value added in the Zone is substantial.
